FORT COLLINS — Colorado State is moving on from its disappointing showing Saturday night at Boise State, .

CSU coach Jim McElwain said Monday that the Broncos were king of the hill in the Mountain West until somebody knocks them off their perch. That somebody wasn’t the Rams. They fell far behind early. McElwain said the loss shouldn’t derail any CSU dreams.

“We’re going to have a good football team as the season moves along,” McElwain said at his weekly news conference Monday. “When you break down the hurt of the loss, there was more encouragement and learning in some of the things that occurred. We responded pretty well after halftime. I don’t think we played our best, but we played a team that is pretty darned good. There are some things that we definitely will improve on and it will start in our practices.”

McElwain said that there were times when his players tried to do more than their jobs against a superior team.

One glaring shortcoming was CSU’s running game. The Rams rushed for 266 yards the week before against Colorado, but gained only 28 yards against Boise State.

“The way the game went was part of it,” McElwain said of falling behind by 20 points in the first half.

Colorado State (1-1, 0-1) has its first home game Saturday against UC Davis.
