CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say a 32-year-old man sparked a natural gas explosion at his Canon City home in an attempt to commit suicide.
Police say the Sept. 4 explosion was caused by a natural gas detonation, and investigators are reviewing the case with the district attorney’s office to determine if charges should be filed against the man, who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening burns.
Fire Chief David DelVecchio says the man was flung into the backyard of the home but was on his feet when responders arrived. The house was destroyed.
Neighbor Char Cornwell told the Canon City Daily Record (http://bit.ly/WW2uSo ) after the explosion that her whole house shook and she thought the neighborhood was being bombed. Nearby homes and vehicles were damaged, and insulation and debris from the exploded home was strewn across the neighborhood and in nearby streets.
