Interview with Michael and Amber Morgan, owners
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: My wife and I purchased this business in early 2014 after working different careers in Arizona. I was working in the medical field as an athletic trainer at a high school and she was working in real estate. We decided we wanted to move in a different direction with our jobs as well as move to a cooler climate, and we had both previously discussed living in Colorado. I had previously worked in the pet industry prior to becoming an athletic trainer and had always talked about getting back into it. We were lucky enough to find Just Pets as an opportunity.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Just Pets is the premiere business for purchasing puppies in the Denver area. We work with the best breeders we can in order to obtain puppies from some of the top bloodlines in the breeding world. I personally drive hundreds of miles to purchase puppies directly from breeders and visit the breeders so that I know exactly what we are getting and make sure they are in top health. The care that we give the puppies while they are with us is unmatched. We pride ourselves with our knowledgeable employees, including having a vet tech on staff, and superior customer service.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The best part of being at Just Pets is working with puppies. However, it is also the customers that we get to see and the families that come in to find a new member of their family. While we love our puppies tremendously, we are there to bring in various types of puppies so that families can come in and find the perfect fit for them, whether it be a specific breed or personality. I also have amazing employees who work hard and give so much love and care to our puppies. Many people do not get to see all the work that they do behind the scenes.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The biggest challenge facing Just Pets is slander and misinformation. Just Pets works with only the best, most ethical breeders. When taking over this business I was amazed at some of the misinformation that was told on the Internet about the business. While there are pet stores around the country that do not focus on quality, that is not us. I pay top prices to get the healthiest dogs possible. I also visit with the breeders quite often. The health and quality of our puppies is so important to us.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: People would be surprised to learn that we are focusing our business on Colorado-made products. As a 100 percent Colorado owned and employed business, we believe in keeping money in the community as much as we can.
