Interview with Julie Hutchison, owner/stylist
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I feel like the industry chose me. It’s a unique profession where we work one on one with people. Every day is different and we are always learning, creating and growing professionally. As far as owning a salon in Littleton, I wanted a place where clients could be comfortable and staff is professional, yet the the culture is friendly and unpretentious. That’s why it is named J. Lyn and Friends.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Our commitment to excellence and our personalized attention toward each guest help distinguish us from other salons. We offer private parking for our guests and we have a fantastic referral program. Staff at J. Lyn Salon has extensive training and many certifications, including but not limited to master colorists, master stylist, keratin complex smoothing, Ouidad stylists (for curly hair), CND shellac master and CMP (certified master pedicurist). We strive to match each client with the correct stylist/tech to meet their needs, not just fill an open space on our schedule.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: Our culture is all about happiness — we are in the happy business. People come to us to look and/or feel better about themselves. We create their image so they like what the see in a mirror — it’s such a privilege. I love the artistic expression and creative outlet.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge as a business is best summed up by the late, great Vidal Sassoon who had this to offer: “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Our profession is very physical and it can be challenging to maintain balance between work and personal time.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We have monthly events like styling boot camps, “curls night out,” “holiday into night hair” and more. We host private events such as bridal parties, women and wine, birthdays and more. We thoroughly enjoy being part of your wedding day, too. We are members of the Historic Downtown Merchant Group, partaking in local events like the Block Party in June where we added color by chalking up hair.
