CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — A sex offender from Indiana who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage girl and killing her mother, brother and sister in southern Colorado is set to be sentenced to life in prison.
Jaacob Van Winkle won’t be eligible for parole under the sentence to be handed down Monday in Canon (KAN’-yen) City under a deal he reached with prosecutors. He doesn’t face the death penalty.
Van Winkle pleaded guilty in June to the March killings and assault. The Associated Press isn’t identifying the victims to protect the identity of the girl who was sexually assaulted.
Van Winkle was convicted in Indiana of child molestation and other sex crimes involving girls as young as 5 and 7 in 2004. He failed to register as a sex offender after moving to Canon City.
