Slow Magic, Robert Plant and more make our list of best Colorado shows this week. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our
4) Hi-Dive Beer Party — Oct. 3, Hi-Dive
Check out all of these ingredients: Beer (New Belgium beer, specifically), a rock club (the Hi-Dive, specifically), a rock band (the Blue Rider, specifically). This is why the Hi-Dive Beer Party is the only good excuse not to get too drunk at your GABF session. Now in its second year, the Hi-Dive Beer Party — thrown in conjunction with the Great American Beer Fest — is quickly becoming one of our favorite nights in October. (Last year they had hats! Free hats!) It goes down Oct. 3 and also includes music from Bud Bronson + the Good Timers.
3) Slow Magic — Oct. 9, Bluebird Theater
We can’t tell you who he or she is. We can’t tell you where he or she from. But we can tell you that he or she one of the most compelling producers to listen to on the Internet and live. While most producers will stand behind a table of electronics and push buttons, Slow Magic takes the opposite approach. The anonymous and masked producer stacks his/her electronics alongside floor drums and plays them along with the recorded beats. It might not sound like much, but in the world of EDM that requires elaborate light shows to make a live performance watchable, Slow Magic provides an actual theatrical element. The DJ released his/her latest album, “How to Run Away,” on Sept. 9 and plays Denver’s Bluebird Theater on Oct. 9. ($12-$15, bluebirdtheater.net)
2) Robert Plant — Oct. 4, Fillmore Auditorium
He’s Robert Plant, the voice of Led Zeppelin. So when we heard that he was making a comeback with a folk album alongside Alison Krauss we gave him a chance and it turned out to be pretty good. When we see him live these days and he plays Zeppelin songs with strange arrangements (African drums?), we’ll still take it, because like we said, he’s Robert Plant, the voice of Led Zeppelin. So, here’s what to expect when the vocal legend plays the Fillmore Auditorium on Oct. 4.: Plant will play his new stuff — some of it good, some of it bad — and he’ll play some Zeppelin hits in ways you won’t see coming. ($69, livenation.com)
Ex Hex, Speedy Ortiz — Oct. 9, Hi-Dive
Two days after the release of their debut album, Ex Hex — the new band from Mary Timony of Wild Flag and Helium — will stop by Denver’s Hi-Dive. The project marks Timony’s foray into traditional rock, rather than the proggy, experimental weirdness of her other bands. But the bill doesn’t stop there. Ex Hex is co-headlining with the excellent ’90s throwback indie-rock band Speedy Ortiz, who have received critical praise for their sophomore album, “Major Arcana.” They play the Hi-Dive with Denver’s Accordion Crimes on Oct. 9.
