Re: “Equip students to handle biased information in college,” Oct. 4 Krista Kafer column.
Krista Kafer’s attempt to extrapolate her criticism of bias from her graduate-level political science classes is full of old and tired shibboleths about the evils of liberal college professors. I sincerely doubt that she helped poorly equipped students to receive a more “accurate and balanced foundation in history and civics” than what she was hearing from her professors.
The college experience is designed to expose students to multiple interpretations of political life and social change, which means that subjects, reading lists, professors, major departments, interpretations of history and civic virtues are unlikely to be uniform. Using language such as “liberal,” “balance,” “propaganda,” “socialism,” “diversity,” “communism,” etc., contributes little in the way of a serious critique of what is actually learned and retained.
Does anyone think the three new Jeffco school board members who want an emphasis on patriotism, free enterprise, and the avoidance of social strife topics are concerned with balance and historical accuracy in the classroom?
