Fights between players are a regular sight at hockey games, but an altercation during an adult amateur tournament game at the Lewis Ice Arena on Saturday led to more fighting and two arrests, police said.
An Aspen Police Department supervisor said Sunday that everything started when a player for DAS Hockey, a team based in Fort Collins and affiliated with Das Auto Salvage, got into it with a player from the Yodeling Pickles, a team from the Denver area, during a Saturday morning game in the Hockey Mountain High tournament.
Fort Collins resident Chris Hau, 31, of DAS Hockey, fought with a Pickles player at one point during the game but the referees separated them, detective Ian MacAyeal said.
“It was your typical hockey fight,” he said. “The refs broke it up, but then (Hau) came back and attacked the other player. The other guy was beat up pretty good, but nothing too serious.”
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. An Aspen policeman cited Hau for assault and battery, MacAyeal said. Then, sometime around 2 a.m. Sunday, a Pickles player apparently retaliated against a player for DAS Hockey at New York Pizza in the Hyman Avenue pedestrian mall. That player was later identified as Patrick Roberts, 32, of Denver, who was cited for assault and battery in that incident, police said.
