BOULDER — Monty Turner will face 36 years in prison for kidnapping his son from his estranged wife’s Longmont home in 2013, after signing a plea deal with prosecutors Wednesday.
Turner, 52, was scheduled to stand trial on 16 criminal counts stemming from the highly publicized kidnapping of his then 3-year-old son, Luke Turner, on May 25, 2013. Both the prosecutors and Turner’s attorneys were prepared for lengthy court proceedings before striking the agreement presented to District Court Judge Andrew Macdonald at the Boulder County Justice Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Turner pleaded guilty to four charges: second-degree kidnapping, felony menacing, use of a stun gun and violation of custody. All of the charges are felonies and fall under the “domestic violence” umbrella because they involved his son and now ex-wife, Brandy Turner. Under the arrangement, the remaining 12 charges against Turner, including three counts of first-degree burglary, have been dropped.
“Our agreement specifically calls for a stipulated 36-year Department of Corrections sentence to be imposed on those four counts,” said Deputy District Attorney Katharina Booth.
