Re: Aspen Elementary School hushes kids at lunch, Oct. 7 news story.
Kudos to the elementary principals in Aspen who are trying to teach manners and respect in the cafeteria. As a retired elementary principal (25 years ago), I recall having taken over a school where the cafeteria was a chaotic, loud place where students had open seating. When I required students to stay with their own classroom group, one of the students started a petition to switch back. I went to each classroom to discuss the reasons for my policy, stopped having the whistle blown and switched lights on and off to warn them, and the results were great.
Parents, do you allow your children to scream or be disruptive at your dinner table?

This letter was published in the Oct. 11 edition. While I agree most elementary school students do not have the best manners and can be overly loud and boisterous, the 1-inch voice rule goes a bit too far. I suggest the school board get together to discuss this rule at a neutral restaurant, one that will give them plenty of peace and quiet to resolve this issue. Someplace like Denny s.
