Like it has done so many times in the past, Cherry Creek won the Class 5A boys state tennis team title Friday at the Gates Tennis Center.
Well, there’s still another day of action to play, but the Bruins have mathematically secured their 40th title in 43 years — the 23rd in Kirk Price’s 25 years as head coach.
“This year’s team was working real hard to let me go out as a winner,” said Price, who .
Creek advanced to the finals in six of the seven brackets, including all three singles and top three doubles.
Creek will battle rivals Fairview in the singles finals. Bruins sophomore Ethan Hillis, the 2013 No. 3 singles champion, will take on Fairview senior Ignatius Castelino for the No. 1 singles title Saturday. Castelino was the No. 1 singles runner-up last year, losing to .
In No. 2 singles, Creek senior Harshil Dwivedi will play Knights senior Tommy Mason. And Creek sophomore Robby Hill takes on Fairview junior Alec Leddon for the No. 3 singles title.
While Price is retiring, he said he’ll still be around the Bruins’ program in the future.
“It’s been a great run and I plan on sticking around and helping the new coach, whoever that ends up being, and help navigate this program because it’s huge,” Price said.
