WESTMINSTER — “You’re on a roll now,” a Legacy assistant coach told the Lightning during a postgame huddle late Friday.
No one argued or took issue. The Lightning ripped Fossil Ridge 52-20 in Class 5A Front Range League play at FirstBank Field. Unranked Legacy moved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league.
While most of the big-school attention for seven weeks has been about Centennial and Jefferson County members — and deservedly so — the rest of the 5A field is taking shape, and the Lightning is bidding to be a large part of it.
Having won four games in a row, why not Legacy in a 5A that still offers some balance?
“No question,” coach Wayne Voorhees said. “You get into the playoffs and anyone can get on a roll, get on a streak, and anything can happen.”
Lots is happening right now for Legacy — it jumped on Fossil Ridge (4-3, 3-2) early and often.
The Lightning had solid line play, quarterback Matt Lynch — the junior has committed to Colorado State — sparked the offense (432 yards), and the defense dominated.
“Defense is playing lights out,” Voorhees said. “We’re executing, and Matt’s just getting better.”
Lynch ran for a touchdown and passed for two more; Connor Connolly ran for three scores; and Khamel Robinson had a 17-yard scoring run.
Said Lynch: “We’re playing the best offense we’ve played.”
The Lightning has put up 143 points over the past month. Monarch and league-leading Fairview await. Legacy’s Evan Baugh also picked off two passes early to fuel the rout.
