The ever-revolving door for Colorado coaches continues to revolve and still contains some odd creaks and cracks.

Ryan Cobbins said he was fired on Thursday as Mullen’s head boys basketball coach just weeks before the start of preseason practice. And Cobbins insists he wasn’t given a reason from interim athletic director Hank Hooper.

Cobbins said he was told he was fired and that the program was going to go in a different direction. And when he pressed the AD for a reason why, Cobbins said the response given was: ”I’m not going to tell you.”

No Mullen administrators were reached for comment.

Heading into his fourth season as head coach, Cobbins, who doesn’t teach at the school and owns a coffee shop in Five Points, said he was disappointed, but “I did my part.”

He had been with the program since the 2005-06 season, beginning on the freshman level.

Mullen, in South Denver, has gone through several administrative and coaching changes the past three school years, including the firing of popular football coach Dave Logan.

The 38-year-old Cobbins, whose team was 8-16 overall a year ago and 1-13 in the Class 5A Centennial League, also said: “I can’t bad-mouth anyone.”

The Mustangs haven’t had a winning record since the 2007-08 season.

First practice for basketball, one of five winter sports, is scheduled for Nov. 12.
