GREELEY — A Greeley man involved in a fatal drive-by shooting in the city has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The Greeley Tribune reported that 23-year-old Corey Moreno was sentenced Wednesday for the July 2012 death of 20-year-old rival gang member Fabian Flores.

Moreno previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Several of Flores’ friends and family members addressed the court, describing the shooting as ridiculous, senseless and cowardly.

Meanwhile, Moreno’s mother, grandmother and younger sister begged the court for mercy by chronicling the tough circumstances of Moreno’s childhood.

In handing down the sentence, District Judge Marcelo Kopcow said that while no one should be raised the way Moreno was, he still has the responsibility as an adult to follow society’s rules.
