Authorities in Mesa County arrested a man on Monday on four counts of child abuse in connection with an August all-terrain vehicle crash that involved four children.

Nicholas Hampton, 20, of Fruita, was driving the ATV with the children aboard when it crashed into a creek after falling roughly 20 feet off a ledge, the county sheriff’s office said.

“Three of the four children were reported to not have medical issues from the crash, but the son of the suspected driver was treated for injuries, spending multiple days in a local hospital,” the office said.

Hampton, who is being held at the Mesa County jail without bond, was also treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Hampton is also accused of driving under the influence of alcohol in relation to the Aug. 17 crash.
