Interview with Dan Savone, owner and general manager

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I ran commercial fishing boats in Alaska for 20 years, where I dealt with a wide range of personalities. I became fascinated with thinking and with people in general, so I decided to go to school, where I got my master’s in psychology. After several years of working with high-risk patients, I took a sabbatical. I went to work with a friend in Aurora where I was able to combine my mechanical skills, accrued from commercial fishing, with my people skills as a psychologist. This led to my decision to open my own independent Subaru shop in Evergreen, near where I live.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We fix a lot of different types of cars and trucks, but we specialize in just one: Subarus. Our mechanics have 20 years of expertise in Subarus and we are networked with the Subaru industry across the entire Western Slope. We offer the best new and used Subaru parts availability in the West Denver and foothills area.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The fast-paced creativity required to bring customer’s projects together and dealing with the wide range of personalities our customers present. Few situations are as simple as bolting on new parts and watching the customer drive away. We always attempt to find a solution to the problem that fits the customer’s budget and time-frame requirements. This may include locating difficult to find parts and networking with other Subaru mechanics who might know an easier solution to a difficult repair. And, of course, we are trying to do a better job than the dealership and at more affordable prices.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Diagnosing obscure problems and letting people know we are here and are the best Subaru option in the area.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I’m a ski nut. An animal, really. I ski as many powder days a year as possible. We are only 45 minutes from the summit, so whenever it snows, I can cut first tracks early in the morning and be back at AllRoos by noon. I used to race when I was younger, but my knees have gotten pretty cranky and only like soft powder now, and I chase as much of it as I can. I was also a fly-fishing guide when I lived in Alaska and there was an article published about me in Alaska Airlines Magazine.
