The race for Colorado treasurer just keeps getting wilder. Or is it weirder?

The race for Colorado treasurer is getting hot.

First there was claiming Capitol security records show her Republican opponent, Treasurer Walker Stapleton, is regularly AWOL from his job. Then there was the , with Republicans debunking Markey’s theory that the only way to get into the Capitol is to use a key card or code that automatically registers every time it used.

Markey fans today came up with their own script to that video, in which they reinforced their contention that Stapleton is the Ferris Bueller of Colorado politics. Rep. Frank McNulty’s new line is about the difficulty in recognizing the state treasurer. And Stapleton’s campaign with Markey on Sunday, where a “disturbingly thin understanding of finance and the treasurer’s office.”

“This is public finance 101,” said Stapleton’s campaign manager Michael Fortney. “Betsy Markey, who is asking voters to elect her as the overseer of Colorado’s finances, once again displayed that she does not have the background or the knowledge to effectively serve as Colorado treasurer.”

A poll released shows Stapleton at 42 percent to Markey’s 40 percent, a surprisingly tight race considering Republicans typically own down-ticket races.

In the video last week from Revealing Politics, director Kelly Maher puts her hair up in a ponytail, dons a jacket and pretends to be Walker Stapleton, who just happens to run into McNulty. The lawmaker uses his key card to open the door, so “Stapleton” has no need to use his.

Here’s part of the Markey Fan Club’s revised script for the Maher/McNulty video, which which still features Maher transforming herself into the treasurer and running into McNulty:

Rep. McNulty: Is that Walker Stapleton? Wasn’t sure I’d recognize you!

Stapleton/Maher: Where am I?

Rep. McNulty: We’re at the State Capitol, in Denver, Colorado. Maybe you’ve seen it on postcards?

Stapleton/Maher: I don’t really want to be here. Can someone else do the job I was elected to do?

Rep. McNulty: Well, let’s at least take a look at where you would work, if you ever showed up.

Stapleton: I thought I was in charge of treasure? Are there pirates inside?
