Interview with Bill Riley, owner/operator
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I was in high school and my late father bought $1,500 worth of used bikes and parts and told me I was going to learn about business. Forty years later, and a ton of hard work and sleepless nights, here we are today.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Our selection and our dedicated staff. We are like all other business that hire people — you always have a bad apple in the bunch. But we really do love what we do and love to get people on the right product. Sometimes we probably care too much.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The aspect of seeing the joy of a person — whether it’s a 2-year-old on their first strider or a grandmother who is so excited getting to ride a bike again because we helped her on a three-wheel adult trike — it is the satisfaction of helping people enjoy their purchase.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: The rising costs of everything, and trying to stay competitive. Also, it is a challenge to find employees who actually care.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That we are not a chain. The owner is on site every day. We carry more than 1,500 bicycles in stock. Our service department is one of the best in town, and at the end of the day we are not perfect, but we really do care about the customer. We always try to say thank you — sometimes it is not heard with sincerity, but we really do thank the community for giving us the opportunity to serve you. Without you, we would not be here.
