Though he has only a couple more months remaining in office, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa should for once do the right thing and resign.

The call comes anew after results of an independent investigation confirmed numerous employee complaints against Maketa,

The investigation, which will be turned over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, found Maketa offered an endorsement to a candidate for sheriff in exchange for personal favors, mishandled internal affairs investigations, and had inappropriate relationships with three female subordinates.

previous calls for resignation, even from the El Paso County commissioners. A recall effort also failed.

Since Maketa was elected, only voters can boot him from serving out his term that ends in January.

Maketa likely will ignore this advice, too. But the damage is done. His presence is not noble defiance. It is just embarrassing.
