Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and a coalition of regional groups said Friday they continue to back the Colorado Department of Transportation’s plan to widen I-70 in northeast Denver and take a portion of it below grade.

CDOT’s is the best way to resolve transportation woes along that portion of the highway, Hancock said.

“The PCL Alternative is an innovative solution to fix outdated infrastructure that has challenged surrounding neighborhoods for decades,” Hancock said. “With Denver alone expecting another 100,000 residents in the next 10 years, for the sake of the neighborhoods and the region, we have to get this transportation project right. And now is the time.”

A growing chorus of critics — including and bring on social and economic woes.

The coalition of regional leaders that back CDOT’s plan includes Adams County Commissioner Eva Henry, American Institute of Architects Denver, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, the city and county of Denver, Commerce City, Denver City Council, Downtown Denver Partnership, Elyria Swansea/Globeville Business Association, National Western Stock Show and Visit Denver.
