A Miami woman who once lived in Denver was sentenced late last week to one year in federal prison for tax fraud, visa fraud and social security fraud.

Libia Hernandez-Garcia, 60, pleaded guilty in May following a February federal indictment. Hernandez-Garcia was also ordered to serve three years supervised release and pay more than $70,000 in restitution as part of her sentence.

Hernandez-Garcia knowingly made false claims against the Internal Revenue Service from 2009 to 2011 by preparing and filing federal income tax returns for several individuals where claims for income tax refunds were fraudulent, according to a news release from Colorado’s U.S. Attorney’s Office.

From 2009 to 2012, Hernandez-Garcia misused the Social Security number of several people in income tax returns, the release said. From 2008 to 2011, Hernandez-Garcia filed false and fraudulent tax returns on her husband’s behalf, the office said.

Hernandez-Garcia also filed fraudulent returns for herself, the release said. Federal officials say Hernandez-Garcia made false statements in petitions for nonimmigrant worker packages.
