GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — A man accused of killing his mother at her Grand Junction home and dumping her body in the desert has been deemed incompetent to proceed any further in the case.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/10AdWET ) a judge ordered 31-year-old Daniel Stetzel on Thursday to be admitted to the Colorado Mental Health Institute, where hospital officials will try to restore him to competency.
Stetzel, a five-time felon, escaped a halfway house June 26 and was arrested in late July after the body of his 54-year-old mother, Kathleen Stetzel, was found near Grand Junction. He was arrested for being a fugitive but was later charged in his mother’s death after he allegedly confessed to stabbing her with a screwdriver during a fight and then wrapping a bed sheet around her neck.
