The Colorado State Patrol identified the suspected carjacker who died in Teller County when he crashed the vehicle Saturday after a pursuit as Anthony Aurelio, of Cripple Creek.

Aurelio, 44, allegedly used a gun while stealing a 1997 Honda Accord at about 4 p.m. in Manitou Springs. He allegedly hit a Manitou Springs Police vehicle and two other vehicles as he sped out of town.

Aurelio has a criminal record that dates back to 1993. His record includes burglary, theft and assault, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

State troopers spotted the stolen car, traveling westbound on Highway 24. Troopers began chasing the car with lights and sirens after the car turned onto southbound Highway 67.

The chase continued for about four miles until the troopers determined the winding road made the pursuit too dangerous. But two miles down the road, Teller County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to use stop sticks to stop the car.

The Honda drove over the stop sticks and then veered off the right side of the roadway and down a steep embankment where it began to roll and eventually landed upside down, according to the news release.

The man driving the car died on scene. No one else was in the vehicle.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing, the patrol said.
