Molly Merrill, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I was looking at opening a women’s clothing store when I found a consignment business for sale in Historic Downtown Littleton. I purchased the business in January 2014 and took a few months to flip the business. I got all the consignment out, changed the name and started my business of new women’s clothing, with high fashion at affordable prices.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Two things separate us from other businesses. Firstly, everything in the store will always be under $100. Since opening, we have not crossed the $80 price point yet, but the guarantee is forever under $100. I am aiming at women being able to splurge on multiple pieces or outfits, rather than a single item. Secondly, we get shipments in every week. With the ability to order on a weekly basis, customers are ensured they’ll always see new merchandise, and can even request certain items or styles. Once inventory arrives, it is posted on various social media sites where customers can see new styles, as well as comment to hold or order what they see.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I went to school for fashion design and metalsmithing (jewelry making), and spent the last four years working in sales and marketing for a large corporation. Running my own clothing boutique allows me to pair my passion for fashion with the business knowledge I have learned. I love working all aspects of the business, from buying to strategic marketing. It is a lot of work, but more rewarding than I could have imagined.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: I already have a great group of loyal, steady customers, and that list is ever expanding, but learning where and how to advertise has been the greatest challenge. Social media has become my No. 1 source, but I am always trying to pair with fashion bloggers, printed advertising and more.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Velvet Wolf makes contributions to local organizations for helping children in need and/or schools, as well as donations to save the wolves foundations and other global species causes.
