Season No. 2 for in-state sports is here.
Preseason practice for winter opens Wednesday for boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, girls swimming and diving, and wrestling. Boys and girls skiers will start once there is appropriate snow.
First contests will be Dec. 1. As usual, there will be the mandatory holiday break from Dec. 24-Jan. 1 in which there will be no play and limited practicing.
Girls swimmers and divers have first dibs on the season’s state championships, with competition in Thornton and Fort Collins from Feb. 13-14. State skiing will be Feb. 19-20 at Keystone and one of the school year’s spectacles, the wrestling tournament, will occur from Feb. 19-21 at the Pepsi Center.
The ice hockey final will be March 7 and the cap to winter, state basketball will be at four sites, notably upper classes for boys and girls at the University of Colorado’s Coors Events Center in Boulder.
And while there will be no overlap with fall and winter sports — the top three football classifications will decide titles on Nov. 29 to officially end the first season of the school year — the opening of spring sports will be March 5, nine days before winter ends.
