And now, for a few math equations: One plus one equals three. This is correct arithmetic for expectant couples, and not because they’re not getting enough sleep. And 52 times 18 plus 4 equals 940 — that’s approximately the number of Saturdays, including leap years, that new parents will have with a child before they turn 18.

So Coloradan a longtime pediatrician and a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, put together a lovely hardback journal to record what parents and children do every single Saturday, whether that’s play in the snow or piles of leaves to special trips, birthdays and outings.

That’s it. “940 Saturdays: Family Activities & A Keepsake Journal” (Potter Style, 2014) is full of lined pages for the dates and notes you’ll fill in. A slender section in the back has age-appropriate notes and suggestions. And that’s all — except a sturdy back-cover envelope containing a booklet of ways to play.

The author calls his book “a guilt-buster” for those Saturdays when life interferes with family plans.” But it could as easily become a child’s cherished memory box once they grow up, a guide to spending time — the most precious thing any of us ever has — with their own future children.
