Interview with Brenna Massa, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I have been getting my nails done for years and started questioning the practices and products being used. I began researching the industry and found out how harmful acrylic nails and other products are for both the client and the nail technician. I discovered nail polishes, tools and techniques that are safe; however, I could not find a nail salon providing this. I believe you should not sacrifice safety for beauty, so I decided to open my own nail spa. I started attending Small Business Development Center courses/workshops, began working with a business counselor and surrounded myself with the most talented nail technicians within the Denver area.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We have a ventilation system like no other nail salon where there is a vent at each and every manicure and pedicure station. We also believe in full transparency, meaning we welcome clients’ questions about how we do things so they feel safe when they are at the Nest Nail Spa.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The friendships we’ve developed with our clients. I also love seeing parents with their children getting services together. Their confidence in us providing the highest level of cleanliness is overwhelming and makes our job so satisfying. I also love it when people say how comfortable they are at the Nest.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our biggest challenge is converting clients from using harmful acrylics and gels to using toxin-free nail polishes and Shellac. There has been a misconception that gels and Shellac are the same, while in reality, gels damage the nail bed and Shellac does not. Unfortunately, many nail salons claim to be using Shellac and are not, which is confusing for the clients.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Clients perceive us as more expensive because of our spa atmosphere and commitment to using only the highest quality products when, in fact, our prices are the same or less than many nail salons.
