Interview with Kelly Fitzgerald, MA, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: For me, yoga began as a personal journey. I discovered yoga at a time in my life when I was suffering from secondary trauma in my work as a mental health counselor. The practice of yoga not only strengthened my body, it also opened my heart to a new way of living. After several months living in Costa Rica, taking what I like to call a life sabbatical, I returned knowing I still had something to offer. I opened my studio to give to others what I have found: peace of mind and a heart-led life.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: My studio is welcoming and down to earth. Anyone new to the space is greeted at once by my enthusiastic black Lab, Java. I get a lot of people saying they are new to the practice or have not practiced for years, along with people simply looking for a space that feels like home. I provide the space to come as you are. I will meet you wherever you are. Each person’s journey is their own and I genuinely enjoy the challenge of teaching a class that both honors and gently challenges each student.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I meet the most amazing people. I get up each day excited to go to work, which is new for me. I love offering a space that is peaceful, that people leave feeling rested and better about who they are. Students often hear me remark, “Oh, wow! Has it been an hour already?” Time goes by so fast because teaching is so much fun for me.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Being up in the mountains makes getting the word out a bit challenging. Also, finding the best times to offer classes while making sure that I have the energy to teach all the classes I am offering. For now, it’s a one-woman show, so I have to be available for what the community needs and also make sure that I am healthy and able to teach.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: How much fun I am having in the process. I have spent so much of my life trying to find my vocation. I have stumbled around a bit. I spent my 20s moving around and traveling. But I have never had an adventure quite like this, in my hometown where I grew up. Who knew that I could find so much joy so close to home?
