Interview with Joshua Gilson, CEO

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: It started as a hobby. My buddy — and, now, business partner — introduced me to flying multi-rotors about a year ago and I’ve been hooked since. We’ve spent countless hours learning about the hobby, traveling around the state and country taking aerial photography pictures and just saw a huge opportunity for a store when we tried to make purchases ourselves. It was rather frustrating having to buy from China all the time, or U.S. vendors in other states, which were simply unreliable. As the former COO and co-founder of a Denver-based telecommunications company, I have a strong background in business management and product innovation. And now here we are. After being an online-only business for about six months, we decided it was time to open a retail storefront. The influx of customers requesting to meet at our showroom was overwhelming. In our opinion, there was no better place than where we live, Castle Rock.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Unlike a typical hobby store, we specialize in multi-rotor platforms for fun and aerial photography. From simple hobbyists looking to record their family vacations, to farmers using them to keep an eye on their crops. There’s a high demand for these multi-rotor copters and, up until now, nowhere to go to get them. We have it all, and in stock, for your viewing and hands-on pleasure. We’re a tier 1 direct importer for major brands like DJI and Walkera, major manufacturers in this industry. We’re also a wholesaler, and provide product to many smaller businesses that cannot meet the MOQ requirements to buy direct.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: It’s not work — it’s fun! Sure, setting up a retail store is work, don’t get me wrong. But at the end of the day, we love what we do.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: I think at this point, our biggest challenge is just letting people know we exist.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I think the biggest surprise is the fact that we simply exist. We’re here, in Castle Rock, and we sell multi-rotors. From little copters that children like my 6-year-old son can’t get enough of, to professional cinema photography machines that carry Canon Mark III DSLRs used in production films.
