Nine hundred people who are determined to end breast cancer sooner than later raised a record $540,000 for research and education by participating in the 2014 Pink Tie Affair.
The money goes to programs funded by
Chaired by Cindy and Bret Bolin, the dinner, dance and auction was held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown. It also was the occasion to present Komen Colorado’s Ambassador Award to KOSI personality Murphy Huston.
Huston was diagnosed with breast cancer in April, had surgery days later and is now on hormone therapy. He is one of approximately 2,300 men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the U.S.
Since his surgery, Huston has gone out of his way to help increase awareness about breast cancer in men and to raise money for Komen Colorado.
“His willingness to educate the community by sharing his family’s experience with breast cancer, and the generous giving of his talents to emcee events and promote our work is invaluable,” noted Carolyn Paul, president of the Komen Colorado board and of .
Also recognized that night were the 2014 Pink Tie Guys: comedian Sam Adams; Jeremy Bronson, owner of Occasions Catering; Shawn Miller, president/CEO of Elevation Media Group; Jeff Hovorka, director of media and marketing for Denver Center Attractions; oncologist Doug Rovira; Brad Holly, a vice president for Anadarko Petroleum; and Chris Martinez, director of small business opportunity at the Denver Office of Economic Development.
That there are seven Pink Tie Guys is no coincidence. The number symbolizes the fact that 1 in 7 Colorado women will battle breast cancer in their lifetime. The Pink Tie Guys are hoping to raise $50,000 for Komen Colorado by year’s end. With $2,641 in donations, Adams is leading the pack.
, Komen Colorado has invested over $39 million in Colorado communities and contributed $14 million to national breast cancer research. In April, the organization dispersed $2 million to 28 organizations in its 22-county service area.
