CALGARY — The Flames and Avalanche meet Thursday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome in game between two teams going opposite directions. Calgary is 16-8-2, much better than the 9-13-2 it was at this point last season. Colorado is 9-11-5, much worse than its 19-6 start a year ago.

The Avs are on a two-game trip, concluding a back-to-back on Friday at Winnipeg. We’ll have much more from the morning skate at the Saddledome, but for now, here’s what you might want to know:

The in a game old friend David Jones scored a goal and a guy named Josh Jooris had three.

Nick Groke’s moving to forward, the position he made his Avalanche debut on Nov. 1, 2013, at Dallas, playing four minutes on the fourth line.

Adrian Dater’s instead of Reto Berra, who has backed up Pickard in the last two games and was pulled for Pickard in the two games before that. Semyon Varlamov is back in net, after missing six games with a groin injury. The Avs went 3-3 in his absence.
