Goalie Semyon Varlamov injured his groin for a third time at practice Monday and will again be shut down, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said.
Rookie Calvin Pickard was recalled later Monday and is the scheduled starter Tuesday against the Nashville Predators at the Pepsi Center. Pickard will bypass backup Reto Berra, who was pulled in his last two starts.
Colorado has deep injury problems at every position, and Roy said he will go with a 19-player lineup Tuesday, one shy of normal. The Avs also recalled Paul Carey on Monday from Lake Erie to serve as the 11th forward.
Forwards John Mitchell (leg), Jamie McGinn (back), Dennis Everberg (shoulder), Marc-Andre Cliche (oblique), Ben Street (hand), Jesse Winchester (head) and Patrick Bordeleau (back) remain out, plus defenseman Brad Stuart (hamstring).
Defenseman Ryan Wilson (shoulder) is out for the season.
“We’re laughing, but we’re not laughing,” Roy said. “All the injuries we’re facing right now, it’s hard to evaluate our team because of it.”
