Interview with David Mura, owner and trainer
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Although I may not have known it at the time, I got involved in the fitness industry because I felt called to do fitness differently. Everywhere you turn you see magazines, TV, movies and more that scream perfection. You see “five minutes to a six-pack,” “beach ready in 10 days,” “new weight loss shake,” or photo-shopped models. It’s unrealistic to achieve, yet we strive for it anyway. The human body is the greatest miracle on earth and we are all unique individuals with greatness inside of us. Fitness is not to be sold on these unrealistic expectations, it is to be found and enjoyed.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We’re more than a gym, we are a family. We know each other by name and know our clients’ limitations and potential. They have families, goals and lives outside of the gym. We honor that by working hard and educating people on eating real food, but there is so much more. We hike, snowshoe, climb and dine. We have fun, we play and connect outside of these four walls.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: We believe that the numbers on a scale or a clothes size should be a byproduct. When done right, fitness has the potential to unlock greatness inside of people. When our clients share stories of how they are changing their family trees and impacting the people they work with in a positive way, it brings great joy, and we celebrate. We are also here to support and lift up each other when life hits hard.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our internal challenge is time. My wife and I have a 9-month-old baby girl who keeps us busy. There is a lot of work to be done and only so many hours in the day. We are blessed to have some amazing trainers who help us out. Externally, our biggest challenge is battling the stigma of fitness being a dreaded workout.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: It’s not about us, rather serving others. That’s our ActivPrayer — inspired actions dedicated to someone or something greater than ourselves. If what we do doesn’t inspire and change lives in our community, then what good is it? We lift up our community and have charity boot camps throughout the year. We also use our strength to serve our community by “adopting” elderly people and people with disabilities, and shovel their drives and walks.
