Interview with Deanne Aichholz, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: My husband and I have always wanted to open an old-fashioned general store. We noticed that there were no stores devoted to kids in Golden anymore, so we decided to start our own toy, candy and souvenir store in downtown Golden.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We wanted to be different from other toy stores, so we don’t carry any of the mainstream toys you can find at the big-box stores. We carry a lot of Western toys, board games and other specialty toys. I especially like to offer a variety of different science and craft kits, so kids can use their imaginations. We also offer all types of hard-to-find old-fashioned candy, wooden bears and souvenirs to round out our store’s many offerings.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: It is always fun to test out all the new toys. We have fun trying out all the newest and best toys that are just coming out on the market.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Some days I feel I want to order everything, but we have limited space. So, probably for me, my hardest challenge is to limit our merchandise as to what can fit in our store.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We offer a lot of locally made products that are made here in Golden or close by. Our store offers everything from chocolate boulders and coffee to hot sauce. We enjoy working with our local community and helping to promote Colorado products.
