Federal officials in eastern Colorado on Monday arrested a Mexican national wanted in connection with a 2010 murder in his home country.
Luis Alonso Soto-Carreon, 50, of Chihuahua, Mexico, was taken into custody in Cheyenne Wells by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, officials said in a news release on Wednesday.
Soto-Carreon is charged with shooting a man three times with a .22-caliber pistol in La Paz, Mexico in September 2010, according to Mexican charging documents. Federal officials stationed in Denver were told in November that Soto-Carreon was thought to be in Colorado.
Immigration records show Soto-Carreon last entered the United States from Mexico in April 2011 from El Paso, Texas on a valid crossing card. However, he was only authorized to stay within 25 miles of the border and stay in the country for 72 hours, according to the release.
Soto-Carreon is being held in Aurora and is scheduled to appear before a federal immigration judge who will rule on his case, the release said.
Mexican officials have been notified of Soto-Carreon’s release.
Federal agents from Denver’s office of Enforcement and Removal Operations say they worked with immigration officials in San Diego and Mexico’s Procuraduría General de la República.
