FORT COLLINS — The man who shot a Loveland police officer during a traffic stop in March was sentenced to prison Wednesday.

Cody Alan Powell, 24, of Loveland was handed a 40-year sentence. He previously pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, a felony, and an amended count of a crime of violence. Powell had faced 16 to 48 years behind bars.

Powell shot Officer Garret Osilka during a traffic stop at 17th Street and North Wilson Avenue on March 2. Osilka was able to radio for help and said he returned fire as an older blue Jeep sped away. The Jeep was found abandoned about six hours later.

Powell turned himself in to authorities two days later.
