The owner of horses seized from a Black Forest property in September pleaded not guilty Wednesday to animal cruelty.

Sherri Brunzell, 62, was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty Sept. 19. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office removed 10 horses and several llamas from her property.

More than a dozen horses were found dead on her property on the 5400 block of Burgess Road. Brunzell told investigators the horses had died over the winter from colic. The Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado Humane Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals moved six stallions and four mares to an undisclosed facility to receive care and treatment.
