Among guests like President Obama and Smaug, may have gotten the biggest honor of his career by being asked to be one of the final guests on “The Colbert Report.” And Lamar didn’t waste the opportunity on Tuesday, as he used the appearance to debut another new song.
Lamar performed alongside Thundercat, two backup singers, percussionists and multi-instrumentalists on Tuesday. Structure-wise, the yet-untitled song is somewhat out of the ordinary, consisting of a lengthy verse from Lamar and a bass groove that builds into a shouting chant of “tell em we don’t die.”
Lamar also sat down for an interview with Colbert, where the host said that since Lamar was the show’s final musical guest, “Paul McCartney, R.E.M., Jack White, and Nas were your opening acts.”
In September, Lamar , new-classic album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.” Since the track’s release, “i” has already appeared on a number of year-end best lists.
With no album title or release date announced, Lamar was also . The track he performed on Colbert marks the second taste of new material from the upcoming release.
