Logan’s run

In November, Dave Logan won his seventh state championship in his 22 years as a coach at his fourth different school when Cherry Creek defeated Valor Christian. A look at the seven title games:

1997: Arvada West 21, Bear Creek 14

Arvada West, led by quarterback Steve Cutlip, entered the championship game having been runner-up the season before to Cherry Creek. This time, the Wildcats, ranked fourth, won, beating top-ranked Bear Creek in the 5A final. The Wildcats’ defense didn’t allow Bear Creek to score in the second half in a game that was expected to be high-scoring.

2001: Chatfield 9, Fairview 3

The Chargers won the 5A championship, their first-ever state title, and finished with a 14-0 record. Future NFL running back Lendale White was a junior for Chatfield, which finished ranked 22nd in the nation by .

2004: Mullen 30, Cherry Creek 9

After falling behind 9-0, the Mustangs scored the game’s final 30 points. Maurice Greer ran for 228 yards and two touchdowns for Mullen. He finished the season with 2,096 yards. Mullen’s defense swarmed Cherry Creek quarterback Kelsey Sokoloski, sacking him six times in the game.

2008: Mullen 20, Cherry Creek 16

The Mustangs defeated the Bruins in the championship game for the third time in 11 years. Trailing 10-6 early in the third quarter, Mullen took the lead for good with back-to-back touchdowns, including a 15-play, 95-yard drive to make it 20-10. Sophomore Adonis Ameen-Moore rushed for two touchdowns and 132 yards for Mullen and was named The Denver Post’s MVP of the game.

2009: Mullen 27, Pomona 24

The Mustangs made it back-to-back titles, but it wasn’t easy. Pomona jumped out to an early 16-0 lead before Mullen rallied to finish 14-0, extending its winning streak to 19 games. Ameen-Moore again was named MVP after rushing for 152 yards and the go-ahead touchdown.

2010: Mullen 37, Regis Jesuit 6

The Mustangs cruised to the three-peat and again finished 14-0 to extend their winning streak to 33 games. Mullen scored the first five times it had the ball to take a 31-0 lead. Ameen-Moore made it a Denver Post MVP three-peat rushing for 186 yards and two TDs, giving him career marks of 6,077 yards and 83 TDs.

2014: Cherry Creek 25, Valor Christian 24

In a classic title game, the Bruins won it with a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. It was the first-ever playoff loss for Valor Christian, which was going for a sixth consecutive state title in three classifications. “I gambled,” Logan said after the game. “The kids made it work. If we don’t get it, it’s not a very smart call by me.” Cherry Creek’s Milo Hall gained 214 yards on 28 carries, scoring twice.
