Oh, you should have seen Peyton. Like a proud papa on the sideline as his backup, Brock Osweiler, , and his tight end, Virgil Green, snagged his first touchdown catch.
It was at the 1:58 mark in the fourth quarter, with the Broncos up by 26. On third-and-goal, Osweiler took the snap, ran right and found Green in the near corner of the end zone.
Magic, boys.
The camera first flashed to Green, pumping his arms in celebration before skipping to the sideline with the touchdown ball in hand.
Then it flashed to Peyton Manning, smiling coyly.
Then it flashed to Osweiler, high-fiving and head-butting anyone who walked in front of him.
Yes, seven weeks after , Osweiler finally, finally got his moment of glory.
“I had to plead my case a little bit to try to get a few passes,” he told reporters on Monday. “But like I said, I’m always just trying to make the most of my opportunities and regardless of the situation just go out there and try to have success.”
But just like in that Week 10 game, when Manning trotted back onto the field while Osweiler was left on the sideline, hands up in disgust after realizing it wasn’t his turn to go in, Manning clearly wasn’t ready to give up the reins entirely.
And the order of the camera’s takes gave it all away. It gave away what Manning had leaked to reporters nearly a month ago, after a November practice.
“I’m going to get him that first touchdown pass,” he had said of his plan for Green. “I’m going to do it. We’re going to do it. It’s just a matter of time. So we’re on a mission.”
Peyton don’t lie.
“It was his kind of call on that touchdown,” Osweiler admitted Monday. “We were all trying to get Virgil a score, and we were all talking on the sideline. He thought up the concept to get him in the end zone, so he was happy for the both of us.”
