Sycamore, Ill., now accepts pennies in its parking meters. (Daily Chronicle/AP file)
Re: “Penny parking thrives in small Illinois town,” Dec. 28 news story.
A town in Illinois has decided to change its parking meters to pennies. The locals decided maybe they want consumers to spend their money at the stores instead of in the meters. It is sad to me that this is so revolutionary, but it is.
For me, this drives everything. My family doesn’t go to downtown Denver for shopping or dinner. Parking downtown is punishment. If I can find a meter, I have to go out every two hours to feed it more. That is the max time you can have. God forbid you try and dine downtown when one of our sports teams are playing. That means itap $20 to park anywhere. We would rather spend our time and money in communities where parking isn’t work. Go to a nice restaurant or store in any suburb — they make parking lots.
The best parking situation I’ve seen was in Santa Fe years ago. There was this great city center/shopping square. They had a big and beautiful parking garage — and it was free. The businesses wanted to make it as easy and process-free for people to shop there.
We want to eat and shop downtown, but it just isn’t worth the hassle.
