Re: “Prominent Colorado attorney and former Bronco Bill Keating dies at 70,” Jan. 2 obituary.

Bill Keating, after playing for the Broncos and Dolphins, earned a law degree at the University of Denver and later became president of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. (Special to The Denver Post)

The headline for Bill Keating’s obituary is a bit understated. Keating was the greatest trial lawyer in Colorado history. It wasn’t just his million-dollar verdicts or victories in the Supreme Court. He helped change the law for people with catastrophic injuries. His lectures on trial tactics were packed. He gave support and instruction to law students and young lawyers for 40 years.

It was a joy to co-counsel a case with him — he was insightful, creative, generous, witty, persuasive and the smartest guy in the room. He loved a great story and held his audience (and juries) spellbound. Although he enjoyed world travel, fine dining and vigorous exercise, he was born for the courtroom.

An absolute giant — respected by his adversaries and loved by his family, friends and clients.
