They seemed to go hand-in-hand. Brian Carey settled on a college decision, then turned in a stellar performance.

Last week, Carey, a senior at Denver East, committed verbally to Texas Southern. Then, on Saturday, Carey threw in 44 points as the Angels, defending state champions in Class 5A, gave ThunderRidge its first loss of the season, 63-59 at the Thunderdome.

“I’m really excited about it,” said Carey, who also received interested from Portland State, some Division II schools and some junior colleges.

Carey called the ThunderRidge victory his team’s best of the season, At 5-5, the Angels may be reloading, but it remains a wide-open field in 5A.

“It was definitely our best game,” Carey said.

Veteran Angels coach Rudy Carey, the younger Carey’s uncle, marveled at his point guard’s most recent performance that included 20 points in the fourth quarter and is pleased that the next segment of his front-liner’s future appears to be secure.

The younger Carey said he expects to sign after the season.

“I’m happy for Brian, because it’s a great school and a great program,” Rudy Carey said. “He’s excited about it and I’m excited for him.”

Brian Carey may have been staring at surgery on an ankle, but treatment and toughness may be enough to postpone it until after the season.

“The therapy must be working,” Rudy Carey said. “Look at his performance.”
