The Broncos finished the regular season with a top-five defense. That group didn’t exist the past few weeks because of injuries, but no longer will the unit be compromised Sunday in .
Weakside linebacker Brandon Marshall, the team leader in tackles, practiced Monday for the first time . He ran through drills, showing good speed and agility in the short viewing period open to the media. His presence suggested he’s on track to play Sunday against the Colts.
Safety T.J. Ward, who , participated in all defensive back drills, a marked increase from the previous two weeks. Ward believed he would be fine, given the rest provided by the bye week.
Quarterback Peyton Manning, for the first time since joining the Broncos as he received treatment on an injured thigh, attended stretch and made all the throws during early practice. Per NFL policy, the Broncos don’t have to release an injury report until Wednesday.
“Guys needed the break to heal up,” coach John Fox said. “We feel good about where we are right now.”
Safety David Bruton and left guard Orlando Franklin advanced through to the point where they were cleared for physical activity. They worked on the side with the training staff, performing light exercises and running drills. Bruton also suffered a sprained neck in the season finale. They must be cleared by the team and an independent neurologist before returning to practice and the game.
The Broncos . Fox said it’s difficult to glean much from that game given how long ago it occurred. Fox offered high praise of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who completed 31 of 44 passes for 376 yards and one breathtaking touchdown in .
“What is unique is that he’s not just mobile, making throws. He’s big, physical and strong. He has that playing strength,” Fox said. “What he has accomplished may be better than any quarterback to date (at this point in his career).”
