Re: “The main reason teachers make far less than athletes,” Dec. 28 letter to the editor.

We agree with letter-writer Steve Schow’s analysis of “economic utility” — athletes entertain thousands of fans, while teachers impact 30 students at a time. It is a cost/benefit analysis, right? In our opinion, however, a very important benefit is missing in Schow’s premise. On one hand, thousands experience pleasure and fervor for the duration a three-hour athletic contest or blockbuster movie. On the other hand, 30 students are guided to be productive, healthy citizens for a lifetime. Wouldn’t humanity as a whole derive more benefit from the latter than the former? We think so.
