We’re documenting our hunt for the best latte art in the Denver coffee scene, as well as expert tips on how to do coffee better.

Location:, 3937 Tennyson St., Denver

Barista: Michael Hammerquist, co-owner

Pro tip: Don’t buy your coffee pre-ground, Hammerquist said.

“The No. 1 thing you can do is to brew within about a minute of grinding. That’s huge because most people don’t know that and get their coffee ground weeks in advance,” Hammerquist said. “Obviously buying a quality coffee it’s going to be more helpful, but whatever coffee you start with, that’s going to be the biggest impact you can make on your flavor, especially when you’re at home.”

“(Once ground) the coffee will start to oxidize almost immediately. After a few days, the interactions that it has with the water, it just stops having that magical quality to it.”

“It’s sometimes hard for us to tell that to people because we don’t want you to have to change your kitchen or your lifestyle — we’ll be happy to grind it for you — but if you want to improve your coffee experience, that’s the best way,” he said.
