Police in Erie said on Friday that a driver accused of injuring a man and killing his dog in a has turned himself in.

Danny Duane Purcell, 63, has been charged in the Wednesday morning hit-and-run, police said.

The hit-and-run happened at about 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Skyline Drive and Mountain View Boulevard where the victim was walking his two dogs.

The driver of the suspect vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on the boulevard and continued into the intersection.

“As the driver turned northbound onto Mountain View Boulevard, the driver struck the pedestrian and one of his dogs while they were in the crosswalk,” police said.

“The accident caused slight injury to the man and caused one dog to become trapped under the pickup.”

The driver initially stopped and the man was able to remove the dog. The suspect then fled, police said.

The victim took his injured dog, Black Jack, to an emergency veterinarian but the dog did not survive.
