The Denver City Council Monday night approved two settlements totaling $235,000 that resulted from crashes injuring a cyclist and a driver.

The cyclist, Ronald Woods of Littleton, suffered broken bones in his face, requiring surgery, after he was thrown from his bicycle in 2009 on the South Platte Trail, due to his front tire getting stuck in a separation between pavement that he contended the city should have filled. The city agreed to pay $88,000 to Woods and his attorneys and $17,000 to a health care provider and insurer.

In the other incident, Denver driver Timothy Vechazone’s vehicle in 2010 was broad-sided by a Department of Public Works vehicle, with the city employee cited. His claim says he suffered “substantial” injuries.

The city agreed to pay $130,000to Vechazone and his attorneys to settle his case. The council approved both settlements in a block vote on resolutions.
