The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says it is mourning the loss of a “beloved” K-9 who spent his nearly decade-long career on the force sniffing out bombs.
Flash, a German Shepard mix, died this week after a battle with cancer, the office said on Wednesday.
During his service, Flash was assigned to numerous protection details and served during some of Colorado’s most high-profile law enforcement responses, including the 2012 theater shooting and in 2011 after a suspect detonated a bomb in the Colorado Mills Mall after- hours.
Flash, who held a number of national certifications, also conducted nearly 7,000 explosive searches and 1,487 perimeter checks at the county’s courthouse.
The office said a memorial for the dog is being planned.
