Phil Downing, who graduated from Broomfield in 2014, was named the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame’s high school athlete of the year, the organization announced Wednesday.
Downing won his fourth-straight state wrestling title — the 17th four-time champion in state history — last February, defeating Pueblo County’s Keenan Willits 11-2 to help the Eagles to the team title, as well.
“Phil is a very unique young man who has a tremendous amount of talent on the wrestling mat,” Broomfield coach Pat DeCamillis said after Downing won the match.
Downing will be honored at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame’s annual banquet, which takes place April 2 at the Denver Marriott City Center. For more information, go to or call 720-258-3535.
